Kalyani Cohort Study
The Scientific Plan : NIBMG is establishing a cohort of about 20,000 individuals drawn from villages in and around Kalyani. This cohort will serve as a platform for long-term, prospective studies on genomics of health and disease, to be carried out under the leadership of NIBMG. Establishing this cohort is being carried out by: (a) a detailed socio-demographic survey of the villages around Kalyani, (b) enrolling individuals using a statistical sampling design, (c) detailed health and disease assessment, using biotechnological and clinical-biochemistry methods, of individuals enrolled in the cohort, including newborns, prospectively at regular intervals of time. Based on the initial health and disease assessment, a number of large sub-cohorts pertaining to specific complex diseases will be established, which will serve as a unified platform for the conduct of genetic epidemiological studies on common diseases.
The Social Outreach Plan : NIBMG is arranging for quality diagnosis of diseases for persons and families enrolled in this study, that is also fostering linkages among the local population, NIBMG and hospitals in Kalyani and Kolkata.
