NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, U.S.A. National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR)
Overview The ICEMR program has established, in 2010, a global network of independent research centers in malaria-endemic settings to provide knowledge, tools and evidence-based strategies to support researchers working in a variety of settings, especially within governments and health care institutions. These Centres have been funded for 7 years by the U.S. NIH. Research activities will be conducted in the following regions, comprising more than 20 countries:
Each Center will:
Each Center will develop and maintain affiliations with local and regional government agencies and established institutions to coordinate research activities and reach relevant study populations and treatment centers. Additionally, each Center will use a multidisciplinary approach, offering a diverse set of scientific expertise including basic science, vector research and ecology, epidemiology and clinical research. The Centers will adapt research projects to changes in disease transmission and will be poised to respond to emerging needs and opportunities within the region. The Centers will bring critical infrastructure to malaria-endemic regions and help build training and research capacity to combat malaria.
